Hand Guns;
The images brought up by the word Hand gun. Do you own, or are thinking
of owning a handgun? Have you thought out what type of gun to buy? Well, here
are my views on the subject of hand gun ownership.
First; Remember a gun is a tool, it is no more dangerous than a hammer or your car, it is the use it is put to that can make a handgun a very dangerous item.
Next what is the use you plan for the gun, will it be used for target shooting, will the handgun be used for Hunting, or do you want a handgun for self defense? These are some of the points to consider when thinking about getting a handgun. Any handgun is fine for target shooting. However, the target models are specializing for this activity. If you plan on Hunting, then a large caliber handgun with a long barrel between six and 14 inches is a good choice. If you are thinking self defense then a mid size handgun in no less than .380 calibers are the choice. As we go thru the pros and cons, it will be noted that some handguns fill all three rolls.
Handguns are available
in many sizes and calibers, but fall into three basic styles, let discuss the
styles for a while.
The first is the Revolver, commonly called six shooters. They have a revolving
cylinder that holds the bullets, and indexes every time the hammer is cocked.
Revolvers are either single action or double action. A single action revolver requires the hammer to be manually cocked for every shot, the double action will cock its self with the pulling of the trigger, or can be cocked by hand. Revolvers are liked for their simplicity and flawless operation.
A double Action revolver is
very easy to fire if one finds them self in a hurry.
The next are Pistols, or Semiautomatic; now remember,
unlike the News Media, I know the difference between a semi-auto and a full automatic
pistol. The semi-auto is so named because it will fire, extracting the spent
case, chamber a fresh cartridge and be ready to shoot again when the trigger is
released and pulled again. A Pistol is magazine fed, which means all the
cartridges are held in a removable carrier that is very easy to remove and
replace. A lot of Law Enforcement units have adopted the pistol because of
this fact.
The last Category is the single shot pistol, these
are normally bolt action, like the Remington XP-100 or breech loaded as in the
Thompson Contender. All single shot pistols are good for hunting and target shooting, but
are not the chosen weapons for self defense, as they do not allow for a fast
2nd shot
